QUARTER SQUARE WINDOW

This small quilt pattern will teach you how to use the Triangles on a Roll Quarter Square grid paper.  It is easy to sew and can be made in bright fabrics or in country plaids.   Once you've made this wall hanging, it's easy to figure how to use Triangles on a Roll Quarter Square grid paper to make a larger quilt.

REQUIREMENTS (FINISHED SIZE 32 inch BY 32 inch):

Four 11.5 inch by 11.5 inch squares of dark fabric

Four 11.5 inch by 11.5 inch squares of medium fabric

Triangles on a Roll Quarter Square 4 inch finished size

1/4 yard black fabric

1/4 yard gray fabric

1/2 yard of border fabric

1 yard fabric for back

1 yard of batting (36 inch x 36 inch)

1/3 yard fabric for the binding

INSTRUCTIONS:

1.      Cut four pieces of Triangles on a Roll grid paper to the size of 10 3/4 inches by 10 3/4 inches with the stitching lines forming an X in the center.

2.      Layer one of the dark squares and one of the medium squares, right side together, then lay one of the cut pieces of the Triangles on a Roll grid paper on the fabric.

3.      Pin the paper to the fabric and machine stitch, following the directions on the Triangles on a Roll paper.

4.      Rotary cut all solid lines.  This will make eight half squares triangles

5.      Press the seam toward the darker fabric

6.      Repeat for the three remaining blocks (see below)

7.      Select two of the half squares, layer right side together, mark the diagonal line across the seam and stitch 1/4 inch seam on each side following the directions on the Triangles on a Roll paper.  Cut between the stitched lines to form two quarter squares.  See example below.

8.     Repeat for the remaining combinations.  There will be too many quarter squares, but you will have several choices for your quilt and a good start on another one!

9.      Cut the black and gray fabric into pieces 1 1/2 inch by 6 inch.   Create mitered borders around each of the quarter square blocks.  The finished quilt at the top of the page gives you an example of how the black and gray fabric should be alternated on the borders.

10.  Set the blocks and sew together.  Cut four border strips, 4.5 inch by 32.5 inch and sew to the quilt, mitering the corners.

11.  Layer with batting and backing and quilt as desired.
